      Description

      1)Download and install virtual box
      Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
      For convenience (Mac version):http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.10/VirtualBox-4.3.10-93012-OSX.dmg

      2)Run VirtualBox
      Use spotlight or go to the "Applications" folder and run Virtual Box

      3)You are now running VirtualBox
      At the main "Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager" Click "New"

      a)In the new prompt window input:
      Name: Ross's Linux
      Type: Linux
      Version: Ubuntu (64 bit)
      Click "Continue"

      b)Choose memory size. This depends on your OS but I input 4096 (4gb) (this can be changed later)
      Click "Continue"

      c)Choose "Create virtual hard drive now"
      click "Create"

      d)Choose VDI (default)
      click "Create"

      e)Choose "Dynamically allocated"
      Click "Continue"

      f)You are choosing a hard drive size. Since we choose Dynamically allocated in the previous step you can make this as big as you want and the file will grow as needed.
      Click "Create"

      4)Additional Usability Settings (optional)
      You should finally return back to the "Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager"
      Click on "Settings"
      In the new prompt window click the "Advanced" tab and choose "Bidirectional" for both "Shared Clipboard" and "Drang'n'Drop"
      Click "OK"

      5)Running the VM
      Double click "Ross's Linux"
      This will start the vm.
      It may prompt you to select a hard drive, just select the one we created in the previous steps.

      6)Mounting the iso
      We do not expect this to work as of yet since there is no image. You may see a black screen with a "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." This is fine because we are about to select the iso by clicking the disk icon in the bottom right corner and select "Choose virtual CD/DVD disk file" find Ross's .iso file. Mine is called "livecd_23Feb2014.iso"

      7)Reboot
      Looking at the VM again, click the close window button in the title bar. Virtual box will prompt you if you want to "Save machine state" or "Power off". Select "Power Off".

      8)Finally seeing results
      You are now back at the "Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager".
      Double Click "Ross's Linux again" and you should see a Lubuntu screen. From here the students most likely select the first option "Try Lubuntu without installing" Select this one and you will see OS in a few seconds. (NOTE: if you do this you must redo steps 5 till the end of your session every time you want to run the iso. If you want to take the time to install the Lubuntu to this VM you may choose the second option)

      9)Getting networking running and install icedtea-netx (javaws):
      Ross knows this is a bug and provided this fix for us. It is documented here https://igbjira.uncc.edu/jira/browse/HELP-23
      Click the Lubuntu icon in the lower left corner. Select "System Tools" > "Xterm" and run the command

      $ sudo ln -s /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf
      $ sudo apt-get install icedtea-netx

      11) Run chromium and go to bioviz.org
      Since you have a command line open you may type
      $ chromium-browser bioviz.org &
      OR
      use the Lubuntu icon in the lower left corner to go to "Internet" > "Chromium Web Browser"

      12)Open IGB
      You can use a JNLP file just select one and then a prompt will come up in the bottom left corner of the browser and Click "keep". After it downloads click the drop-down arrow icon to the right of the file name and select "Show In Folder" secondary click on the .jnlp and use "IcedTea Java Web Start"
