• "List main take-home messages for the paper"
• "Create lo-fi sketches of figures"

to precede:

• "Create outline of paper"

By "lo-fi," I mean something like a whiteboard sketch - something that can be created and revised quickly. Goal here would be to create something that could be used by a student (or other team member) as a guide to creating a more detailed, professional image for publication.
