what: introduce tardigrade genome resource in IGB; show IGB, show how to find tardigrade (aka water bear); show how to select a gene model and do a blast or interpro search; show how to access RNA-Seq data and assess gene expression visually; or assess sequence differences
who: tardigrade researchers who want to use RNA-Seq or other genomic technologies in their research; others who are working with emerging model organisms and their draft genome assemblies
why: answer research questions about tardigrade, like: what genes are up-regulated under stress in tardigrade?

outline:

• igb is a free and open source genome browser you install on your computer by visiting bioiviz.org
• download by clicking on the link and running through the installer wizard
• once igb is running, you use the current genome tab to select the genome assembly of interest - species is Hypsibius exemplaris and genome assembly version is H_exemplaris_Z151_Apr_2017
• show how the genome assembly loads and includes many thousands of contigs and the gene models load automatically
• show how there is a "i" button next to the gene models name; if you click there you will go to a web site we've set up with some information about the data files being shown with a link to the original data we got from NCBI (need to check that the link is there and that it works)
• mention that in future, we can put RNA-Seq data sets there and mention which data set we are probably going to deploy first
• then show the advanced search to see if we can find genes that are related to ioniziing radiation mention that tardigrade are famous for being able to withstand ionizing radiation; provide a link to a paper
• locate a gene in the list of results, double-click on it to zoom in
• show how you can use blast search and also protannot to better understand the gene function
• show how you can make a bookmark and make a note about the gene so as to return to it later
