Description
Task: Get in touch with Cyverse and tell them we would like a 4TB lab account. Specify that we would like to use it as a lab account (i.e., not attached to a single person) or at least have the ability to designate users that can access the account. Mention Dr. Freese in the email since he has worked extensively with their team in the past. Also ask if we can pay with purchase order to avoid having to pay with credit card.

Ann Loraine and Nowlan Freese, here's the response from Cyverse. They've confirmed we can make a shared account for the lab that can be accessed by multiple lab members. There's also some information here about how data storage works and whom we can send our purchase order to!
Hi Paige,
You can have a single account for the lab that you all can access. In addition to that, if you each have individual accounts then you can share any folders underneath that account with that account. That usually works quite well for data storage. CPU usage is a little bit trickier because the CPU allocation would all go to the shared account, so any data analysis that you do would have to be launched using the shared account in order for the CPU hours to be counted against its allocation.
I'm struggling a little bit describing that, so hopefully it was clear. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
[...]
The easiest way to create that account is to go to our user portal at https://user.cyverse.org and create it there. Some of the questions that it asks are intended for individual users, but you can choose whichever response seems most reasonable. You can find our pricing information here: https://cyverse.org/subscribe. The rate for a Pro subscription is $400 per year. Once you've go the account, please feel free to send us the purchase order, and I can forward it to Tara for processing.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if you encounter any problems.
Sarah (sarahr@cyverse.org)
Thanks Paige Kulzer!
I just now created a "lab account" in Cyverse. The username is "lorainelab2025" and the associated email is aloraine@proton.me.
For the next steps, can you work with Shelley and Cyverse (Sarah?) to get the "Pro" subscription started? Sounds like you and she would need to figure out how to create the Purchase Order and then send it to CyVerse. This may require getting CyVerse into our vendor system. It's definitely do-able but has a few steps that involve CyVerse people filling out some paperwork and stuff like that.
Once that is done, we can then proceed to transfer the data from our cluster over to the new account
!
FYI:
I just now tried to log into the new account. I was able to log in using my email (aloraine@proton.me), but was not able to log in using the user name I had made up for the account (lorainelab2025). So, I used the chatbot interface to send this help request:
Help request entered in the CyVerse chat interface:
Hi! I just now created a new account for my lab. I ultimately want to make this account into a "Pro" account - the one where we can get 4 Tb of internet-accessible storage for $400/year. Probably two or three users at the maximum will be accessing the storage, doing things like uploading and organizing files. Anyway, I created the new account using an email address that I control and a user name of "lorainelab2025." However, when I tried to "log in" using the user name (lorainelab2025), I got an error. However, when I used the email address (aloraine@proton.me), I was able to log in. Could you help me figure out why the system is not accepting the user name, even though the login screen says to enter either user name or email? Thank you very much! Yours, Ann Loraine, Professor, UNC Charlotte, Bioinformatics and Genomics
Great, thank you! I reached out to Shelley to get started on the purchase order. She let me know that we will need to pay via pcard rather than purchase order since it's not a listed vendor in 49er Mart. I believe we will be able to do this through the new CyVerse "lab account".
Ann Loraine, OneIT requires that this form be filled out for any software subscriptions prior to purchase: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/fe334e7f5c894c66b6dc07708d2c9ea3
Hi! Please work with Shelley and CyVerse to add CyVerse to our vendor system. I would like CyVerse (which is run by University of Arizona) to be added to our vendor system so that we won't have to use credit cards for payment now or in the future. There are often problems with credit cards, such as the card expiring or bogus charges getting made.
Thanks Paige Kulzer!
Please work with Shelley to fill out the required form. You'll need to ask her for help. For example, the form requires you to select the Purchasing Agent. I have no idea whom to select, but she probably will.
If there are fields you absolutely cannot figure out how to answer even with Shelley's help, I might be able to answer.
I've submitted the form to OneIT for review. I will update this ticket once the review process is complete.

Thanks Paige Kulzer!
It may take a little while for the OneIT step to happen. Could you and Shelly work on getting U of Az / CyVerse into our system's vendor list in parallel? Basically, they need to fill out a form and submit it, if I recall correctly. That step can take a few days to complete, but sometimes it's very fast!
OneIT has approved our request for CyVerse:
FY26-1231 Request for CyVerse Approved
The CCI department's request for CyVerse with University of Arizona has been Approved.OneIT approval is based on an IT perspective only. Please reach out to your assigned Purchasing Agent James Parker or the Purchasing Department to let them know that OneIT has approved this request and you are ready to proceed with the next steps.

That's great news! Thanks Paige Kulzer
Please let Shelley know that we'll be using the "state account" for the new subscription.
As per a prior comment, do please make sure that the new account is for "username" of lorainelab2025 which is associated with email address aloraine@proton.me

Attn Ann Loraine, there's been a delay in procuring a quote from CyVerse:
Hi Shelley,
Apologies for the delay on this. We do not currently offer discounts for Universities or non-profits on our subscriptions or services and are in the middle of transitioning from being an almost wholly grant-funded program to one reliant on sales and service revenues to maintain operations. With this transition much of our back-office infrastructure is in flux as we build the infrastructure to create and issue quotes (and invoices, and collect payments, etc.). Sarah and I are working very diligently to get that all built out, but it will be at least a few more days before something can be issued. I truly appreciate your patience, and we will be in touch as soon as we possibly can with that quote to enable you to finalize the PO on your side.
Warm regards,
Noah
Ann Loraine, we should be able to purchase a CyVerse subscription with a credit card at this time.
Hi Paige,
Thank you again for your patience and understanding. It was just confirmed that the service request portal with credit card payment option is still up and available. According to Sarah (copied) you can log into the DE (I don't know this acronym, so sorry I can't elucidate) and click the Buy button, or you can go to https://cc-relay.cyverse.org and submit a request, which will take you to the credit card processing portal.
Warm regards,
Noah
Attempting to get a CyVerse account as per note from Noah:
- Logged in to CyVerse as "lorainelab2025" user using login screen here: https://user.cyverse.org/
- Logging in using the above URL takes me to a screen named "CYVERSE USER PORTAL" with a section titled "My Services". Discovery Environment (DE) is one of the services listed. Next to the Discovery Environment (DE) service section there is a link labeled "LAUNCH"
- I selected "Discovery Environment (DE)" > "LAUNCH" which opened a page titled "DISCOVERY ENVIRONMENT"
- In the upper middle of the page, there is a link labeled "Buy"
- Clicking the "Buy" button opens a page that says "Sign In Required You must sign in to perform this action" with a link labeled "Sign In".
- When I clicked the link labeled "Sign in" a new page opens with a screen that says "Cyverse Try signing in with a different account Sign in with Keycloak"
- Clicking the link labeled "Sign in with Keycloak" simply causes the same page to reload. The URL of the page is: "https://cc-relay.cyverse.org/api/auth/signin?error=OAuthSignin" suggesting that something about the page is broken.
Thus it appears that using the Discovery Environment workflow as recommended by Noah leads nowhere.
Next, I tried the other workflow recommended by Noah.
- I visited https://cc-relay.cyverse.org/ directly
- This page showed me a screen that says "Sign in Required You must sign in to perform this action" with a link labeled "Sign In"
- When I clicked "Sign in" a new screen appeared with log in fields. I then logged in using the lorainelab2025 user name and password.
- After logging in, a new screen appeared letting me know that my current subscription tier is "Basic" with an "Upgrade" link
- Selecting the "Upgrade" link showed options to purpose upgraded plans. The one we want is the "Pro" plan at $340 per year with the following features: 3 Tb data, 20000 CPU hours. I selected that option.
- In then clicked a shopping basket icon at the top right of the page with options to enter Billing address, payment details, etc. Because I don't have access to the credit card, I stopped there.
I think Paige could do this if she has the login information. Because I'm working remotely, it would be easier and faster if she could do this. I will contact her via email with the login information.
Dr. Loraine has confirmed that the account has been made and the subscription has been purchased. I've confirmed that I can login using the shared account info.
The linked ticket can be used now to capture the task of copying Rasha's scRNA-Seq data to CyVerse.
Email inquiry has been sent!
