      Description

The current BioViz Connect video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okbsr4XYgn4) walks us through the basic functionality.

This is great, but now we need a shorter video giving some background information explaining terms used in the BioViz Connect walk-through video.

Let's create a new video that focuses on introducing key topics, structured as a traditional slide show we would present at a conference where we introduce background information about a topic or new tool.

As a model, see the first 20 minutes of:

This video starts off with slides explaining this very technical topic and then moves on to a hands-on demonstration of using containers in research.

For this new BioViz Connect introductory video, some questions we need to answer:

      • What is CyVerse?
      • What is Discovery Environment?
      • What is BioViz Connect? (Can show some slides illustrating BioViz Connect functionality)
      • What are Terrain APIs?

Let's assume that the audience is broad. For example, it may include grad students who are getting started with storing their data in CyVerse and who do not know anything about APIs. Alternatively, the audience may include bioinformatics experts who are familiar with programming and APIs and would be curious about how BioViz Connect is actually working behind the scenes.

To get a sense of how you can craft a talk/slide deck that aims to make both groups happy, take a look at this slide deck describing the larger IGB project:

Note how there are some very wordy slides that explain in formal technical terms how some of the features are actually working. You can do something similar, going as deep as you like. Since this talk will be on-line, people can skip past parts they are not interested in.

Once the slide deck / video is completed, let's deploy it in a new section in the YouTube channel together with the walk-through video.

      Suggestions:

      • Make the slide deck first
      • Give the talk "live" via zoom and record it
      • Watch the recording and improve the slides as you see fit
      • Give the talk "live" via zoom again, and record it
      • And repeat?

            Suggestions:

            • Split slide 6 into 3 slides. Change bullet points to title and create graphics that illustrate these 3 key features. Alternatively, enlarge the BioViz Connect graphic and transform the bullet points to call-outs pointing to places in the UI where users would access the features mentioned.
            • Slide 5: I would recommend making the graphic larger and adding context of the entire Web page, assuming it fits. Also, add call-outs indicating where users enter data. Might want to mention that users have to pick a user name? (Not sure if they do that or not.)
            • Somewhere in the slide deck – maybe as a new slide? – emphasize that BioViz Connect's "value added" for users is that we make it super easy for users to visualize their cloud-hosted data in a genome browser.
            • Somewhere in the slide deck – maybe as a new slide? – emphasize that our "value added" for computer scientists are: (1) We show how highly interactive desktop application can communicate with a fully web-based application via REST APIs on both sides and (2) We show how one can build an entirely new and user-friendly Web interface for a science gateway when the gateway provides an API for same.

Also, just wanted to let you know: I made some edits to the wording on the slides. Feel free to discard or use whatever makes sense. Since you will be presenting the slides, it's important for the slides to contain wording you feel comfortable saying!
