      Description

Situation: We will give a webinar on BioViz Connect at 1pm eastern on Friday September 23.

Task: Prepare to give the webinar.

CyVerse contact person: Tina Lee - tinal@cyverse.org
      CyVerse Webinars: https://cyverse.org/webinars

Create a "game plan" for the presentation.

      Ideas for how to prepare:

      • Outline the slides
      • Consider making videos in place of live demonstration
      • How do we want to split the talk between KR and NF?
      • Find out the amount of time available for the talk
      • Re-watch talk from Michelle and other CyVerse guest speakers - to get a sense of structure, etc.
      • Can we find out which videos have the best follow-thru to the end of the video (to find out what works best for the format and setting)
      • Check how the CyVerse page looks (update KR info, etc.)
      • Plan dates for practice talks (rehearse alone, rehearse with a friendly audience, record a rehearsal, etc.)

That’s great news, thank you Nowlan!

First order of biz is to come up with a working title and a short description. If you would kindly answer the questions below, I can draft up a webinar description for you to massage into shape. Pls see Michelle’s webinar description for an example (https://cyverse.org/webinar-streamlit). The description can be slightly vague at this point, as most people don't develop their actual presentation/slides til 1-3 wks before the webinar.

What aspects of BioViz Connect will you be showing/presenting?
            Who is your target audience?
How will this webinar benefit this audience/What will they learn?

Nowlan, will you be the presenter? If so, could you pls send me a short bio sketch or your CV/résumé (or link to online info). If not, please let me know who will be and their contact info.

One more thing: may we use the BioViz Connector logo as the banner for the webinar description page?

Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to working with you on this.

            Hi Tina,

Working title: BioViz Connect: View your CyVerse data in the Integrated Genome Browser

Aspects: We will show how to use BioViz Connect to add Integrated Genome Browser (IGB) specific metadata to files and how to then view those files in IGB from CyVerse. We will also be discussing how BioViz Connect was created using the Terrain API from the perspective of an external (i.e. not CyVerse or UofA) group.

Audience: Researchers who are interested in visualizing genomic data and developers/engineers who wish to build their own tools/apps using the CyVerse Terrain API.

Benefit: We hope that researchers will learn how to use BioViz Connect so that they can visualize their CyVerse data in IGB. We also hope that developers/engineers gain additional insight into how to create tools/apps using the CyVerse Terrain API.

Presenter: I will be the primary presenter but I would also like Karthik Raveendran to present on the technical details, as he is the PhD student who did the majority of the engineering. Nowlan LinkedIn and Karthik LinkedIn.

I have attached the BioViz Connect logo and banner for use on the webinar description page.
I have also attached a rough draft of the webinar description.

I was also hoping it would be possible to talk with someone regarding how the migration to a subscription model would impact the use of the Terrain API as we may need to make changes to the BioViz Connect codebase. Our previous contacts were Sriram Srinivasan, Sarah Roberts, and Paul Sarando, but I believe Sriram has moved on?

Thank you again for this opportunity!

Nowlan, I tweaked your description just a bit with some 'marketing' lingo, how does this sound/read? Anything you're not comfortable with or want to revise?

            About the Webinar
Genomic data can be vast, making analysis and visualization (and the discoveries that may lie within!) a challenge. If you store your genomic data in CyVerse and use Integrated Genome Browser (IGB), a flexible and free genome browser, to explore and visually analyze your data, life just got sweeter thanks to BioViz Connect! Join us to learn how this custom web app lets you easily view your CyVerse data in the Integrated Genome Browser itself. Nowlan Freese and Karthik Raveendran of the UNC Charlotte Bioinformatics and Genomics department, who built BioViz Connect, will demonstrate how to use it and how they built it on top of the CyVerse Terrain API.

[~aloraine] - This looks good to me, but I would appreciate if you could give final approval.

            Hi all,
Here's the BioViz Connect webinar posting on the CyVerse website: https://cyverse.org/webinar-BioVizConnect. Please let me know if there are any changes or mistakes so I can fix asap; you are welcome and encouraged to share that page with your network. And if you're a social media/twitter person, by all means, tweet away!
About 10 days before the webinar, we'll do a promo email to our mailing list of 70K users and folks who request event info. That typically draws registrations. At that point, I'll share the reg responses with you, as one of the questions on the response form is "What do you most want to gain from the webinar?" and sometimes there is a response or two that you can address in your webinar and really make someone's day!
            cheers, !
