To do:

• Update IGB logo at the top of the poster
• Update the author list
• Update the abstract
• Update Galaxy image on the bottom left of the poster
• Update Bioviz images in the middle of the poster
• Add a step for clicking the bar chart icon on data in History
• Make textbox and text sizes consistent for all of the numbered steps
• Remove the image at the bottom middle of the poster that refers to memory usage
• Remove drop-shadow from all images
• Possibly update the GCC and UNCC logos at the bottom right of the poster
• Possibly update the image and callouts on the right of the poster (if we could make this example about tardigrades, that would be relevant to the talk and therefore ideal!)

Questions for the reviewer:

• Would you like to use the 2014 abstract or the 2024 abstract for the poster? I left the abstract on the poster untouched because it is a good summary of IGB's integration into Galaxy and matches with the poster contents, but we submitted a new abstract this year to go along with our upcoming talk. If it needs updating, I will need to create a shortened version of the abstract we submitted this year since it is significantly longer and won't fit in the current layout.
• Similarly, would you like the large image and its callouts on the right panel of the poster updated? Showing tardigrade data in IGB rather than A. thaliana data would tie the poster in with our upcoming talk a bit more.

Comments:

• The new arrows added to the lower left corner of the poster do not match the existing arrows. The colors and the line widths are different. It looks weird.
• The new images added are replacing a single image. The graphics are very hard to understand because there are now two images instead of one, and the arrows and word balloons (callouts) are covering parts of the Galaxy interface.
• The new word balloon looks really weird because the pointer part is dark grey and the rest of the balloon is not.
• There needs to be as little text as possible. As always, use imperative voice, present singular second person. For poster graphics to be effective, you need the reader to look at the interface - the screen captures - FIRST. If the graphic is working well, they should be able to understand what the graphic is trying to communicate. The word balloons and callouts are there to help the reader confirm that what they already deduced about the interface is correct, or not.
• CHECK: what does the Galaxy documentation call the little bar-chart looking thing that needs to be selected before the user can open IGB to see the data file? Are we making up the term we use for that icon, or is it truly the correct term? Try to find the term on your own and THEN contact the Galaxy help mailing list to find out if you are correct. The goal here is to engage with the Galaxy developer community. It's is super-important to do that because this community truly is a community - and if they know who you are, they will be incredibly helpful.
• A new design is needed to make it more clear what is going on with the Galaxy interface.

Implemented changes:

• Removed the weird-looking arrows as well as the second of two images from the lower left corner of the poster.
• Reformatted the rounded rectangular callout so that its background is all one color.
• Added a mouse icon to this callout to make it really clear what should be clicked on without needing to read the text boxes below the image.
• Added another rounded rectangular callout pointing to the Visualize icon to make it clear which icon is being referred to.
• Changed the wording from "bar chart icon" to "Visualize icon" per Galaxy documentation I found at the following link: https://galaxyproject.org/learn/visualization/charts/

For review:

• Does this new design make it more clear what is going on with the Galaxy interface?
• Are there specific areas on the poster with too much text?
• Also, see my previous comment for two questions I have relating to the Abstract and the Integrated Genome Browser figure.

Comments:

• The large amount of negative space in the page screen captures in the middle panel looks odd. Why is there so much? I recommend: Re-do the images and re-organize the layout to create balance.
• The images look like their resolution is low. When printed in large format, it could look terrible. When you re-create the images, try this: (1) open chrome on a LARGE monitory - not a laptop. (2) Make the browser window big and increase font size by pressing SHIFT-COMMAND-[+/=] key. (3) Screen-grab the browser window - the entire width and just enough in the vertical dimension to capture the menu, the links at the bottom, and a strip of the gray space for balance. (4) Insert the captured images into the poster and re-size them, while preserving aspect ratio. This is a cheap and easy way to create a screen grab that has sufficient resolution to look good when printed.
• The background orange in the lower-left callout looks over-saturated. Adjust the color so that it doesn't dominate all the other graphics.
• The IGB logo at the top right looks weird and out-of-place. Try the gray one instead. Put it on the left side of the poster. Gray one is in here: Dropbox / IGB / Outreach / Images

Print a test copy on the large-format printer in the office. Do this today - don't worry that we will make more edits. We need to see what it looks like when printed so that we can catch any weird digital blips. For example, the author list font looks a little weird.

Comments from Ann Loraine during our latest meeting:

• Make numbers on the figure in the bottom left hand corner into shapes with a colored outline
• The bottom left hand side of the poster is unbalanced. Make the test boxes smaller and move them down on the poster, get rid of the arrow connecting them, ensure the white space between all of them is the same
• Move numbers to the side of the image in the bottom left hand corner so that the image isn't being obscured
• Increase transparency of the orange text box
• Remove most of the gray space from the middle figures to match the amount of gray space on the side of the images
• Add drop shadows back in on most images as well as the large arrows
