Subject: my IGB fail to output the svg format

      Hi,

IGB is really a great tool to visualize genome alignment data, but I have some trouble in outputting svg image. I can save image as svg format successfully, but failed to open the image that svg format. I will be deeply grateful if you give me some advises or help me to solve this problem.

            Hello,

It is nice to hear from you.

This sounds like it may be due to a problem that was fixed in a relatively recent release. So first thing to try would be to update to the latest version of IGB - bioviz.org.

Nowlan and Mason, would you follow up? Maybe send a link to the User’s Guide on working with SVG files?

Please keep me posted on how it goes.

            Best wishes,

            Ann

            Dear Yanhui Wang,

Please let us know if you're still having issues with SVG files after updating to the latest version of IGB. If you are still having issues, please let us know what you are working on (Linux, Mac, Windows), and if possible provide the non-functioning SVG file from IGB so that we can deduce the problem. Here is the user's guide link to working with SVG files: https://wiki.transvar.org/display/igbman/Editing+IGB-generated+SVG+files

Hi, thank you for your reply, I'm sorry too busy recently.

I run IGB on Windows 7, I have used IGB 8.2 & 8.1 before sent mail to you. And read the page about working with SVG files: https://wiki.transvar.org/display/igbman/Editing+IGB-generated+SVG+files carefully. But neither AI nor

Inkscape can open the svg files, it warned : the svg file is invalid. The attachment is a test svg file come from my IGB 8.2 on windows. Fortunately, I have found a software called SVGDeveloper can open and edit this file two days ago,

and as user's guide said, the graphics extend outside image area.

            Best wishes,

            Wang

            Dear Yanhui Wang,

I'm glad to hear you were able to find a program to edit your svg file. I was able to use your helpme.svg file to isolate a potential issue. If you have time, could you please see if the edited version of your helpme.svg file I have attached will now open in Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape on your system? Thank you.

            Dear Wang,

I'm glad to hear you were able to open the attachment! The only change I made was to remove a descriptor within the svg file itself using a text editor. The descriptor I removed had to do with the date on line 16, which in the original helpme.svg file had several non-standard characters. If you don't mind me asking, is the computer you're running IGB on in English or in another language (and if so, what language)? Thank you for your help in this matter!

We should probably re-examine the internationalization code we added to IGB that enables the program to display Chinese and other characters that are not ASCII text. (IGB uses Unicode to represent letters and numerals, which enables computer programs to use a richer character set than ordinary ASCII, which is very limited.)

However, the SVG-generation code may not be handling these characters correctly.

Thank you Dr. Wang for reporting this problem - we have many users in Asia and so this problem may be hindering many people’s work.
